The Mercury Shivalinga The yogi’s secret to Immortality
Mercury is believed to be the vital fluid of Shiva by many a Yogi in the Himalayas. These ascetics make “Alchemical shivalingas” to use in their meditations. The Paras-Mani or Mercury gem, as it were, assists the yogis in raising their consciousness & arresting the aging process of the body to attain immortality.
In its liquid form, Mercury is likened to the flittering mind which is hard to contain, running hither-thither like a deer. It also carries poisonous substances like Arsenic & sulphur. However, when it is consolidated by alchemical means, it loses its poisonous elements and supplies a “nectarine effect”, which it transmits to the body & mind of the yogi & elevates his spiritual consciousness while conquering bodily decay.
Noteworthy here is that the process of solidification is “Alchemy.” Unlike chemistry which works on tangibles & accords value in only that which can be experienced through the senses, Alchemy acknowledges the divinity in matter. It recognizes man as a spirit, created by the cosmic forces, who takes on the form of a soul with mind, feelings & body. So it is a magical-mystical process which relies on divine intervention.
Making a consolidated pure Shivling is an interesting process broadly described as follows. To begin with, it requires the removal of harmful contents like sulphur & arsenic. This is done by applying some salts, which make it a powdery substance that looks like a silvery cloak when put in water. It then takes on the form of flowing mercury. This process is repeated thrice or more till it becomes “fainted mercury”. Following this “a leeching of the burning arsenical sulphur” occurs which appears like greasy black residual soot. After this the mercury is solidified using “concentrated herbal extracts & mineral ashes.” Using few more processes & chanting specific mantras or incantations the Lingam is imbued with the appropriate samskaras or impressions worthy of a spiritual device potent enough to awaken the yogi’s “evolutionary force” or Kundalini Shakti.
It is said, that once it has been detoxified of its poisonous elements by the aforementioned processes, the mercury takes on exquisite properties & houses within itself empty space where memory can be built. That literally as it were, implies that the Shivalinga of mercury has memory, which is captured in the hollow space left after the removal of the toxins. Stored in this memory is infact the spiritual charge including impressions & emotions of the practicing yogi who infuses in the Paras-mani, the life energy capable of making it responsive to his prayers & spiritual yearnings.
The consolidated mercury-gem or “philosopher’s stone” as it is also called then radiates spiritual energy & is capable of “purging” the mind of negative thoughts and paving the way to bliss & spiritual evolution. Of course, how effectively this will happen also depends on the yogi in charge of the deity. A newer initiate must learn the correct yogic procedures from an adept to channelize the proper flow of energy.
The magical effects of a Lingam, made of mercury, include the following. It has the ability to assist in the awakening of the Kundalini. As the yogi progresses along the path, it enables him to convert his sexual energy into spiritual energy. It stimulates the separation of the astral body from the physical one. It sharpens the intellect or “Buddhi” & with its nectarine quality retards the decay of body cells & promotes rejuvenation & formation of a body of immortal light.
Of course, ultimately all this leads to spiritual advancement & the graceful Mercury Shivalinga, help’s the pilgrim progress on his path to elevated states of awareness.
