There are some people who live their lives with an overflow of positive energy. These people are a pleasure to talk to and work with. Even in strenuous situations you will tend to feel more calm in their presence. The reason for this is that they have managed to find something many people lack in our busy world – they’ve found their Sambhava or Inner Peace.
We all desire happiness and search for it in many ways. But what few people realise is that happiness lies within ourselves. And when you empower your mind, you truly can become the possessor of an inner peace that, right now, may be hidden from you.
What we learn from Shiva is that happiness and inner peace, Sambhava, is a choice that we each must make. You are free to choose how you will approach every area of your life – in good times and bad. For example, when things don’t turn out your way, you can always choose to brood! But my question to you is this: how will that help?
Let us find out directly from Shiva how choosing Inner Peace wins out – even over a game of dice!
A Game of Dice
For their entertainment Shiva and Parvati often played the game of dice. To make the game more interesting Shiva suggested that the winner of the game have the right to ask for something from the loser. Parvati agreed to the wager, and Shiva unfortunately lost the game. How Shiva actually lost his Loin Cloth and the game as a whole is narrated in the full course, but for now it suffices to know that Shiva lost the first game.
Shiva was disappointed until Vishnu appeared and asked him to play another game, saying he would ensure Shiva’s victory. With Vishnu’s support Shiva indeed won. Parvati grew curious about his sudden success and accused her husband of cheating.
At this moment, Vishnu appeared and shared that it was he who was defining which way the dice moved. He also revealed a cosmic secret, “In this game neither had Parvati lost nor had Shiva won, the game was a mere illusion and our quarrels are nothing but a mere delusion”.
After this realization Shiva and Parvati understood that life, in this way, is like a game of dice. Which way it will flip is sometimes beyond our control. All one can do is maintain a sense of inner peace, continue playing the game and giving it your best.
A short, but extremely important lesson for life is hidden in this story. When you understand that dice is a metaphor used for events that shape your life, you can see how Shiva and Parvati accept this: They understand that life can unfold beyond our control at times.
What is most important then, is your attitude. Since you can always play another game, (and in fact playing again is always your best available alternative) why brood? Find your Sambhava and move on!
Thus, while you may have had failures in the past, that is surely not the end of life. What you must do is make the choice for inner peace, roll the dice again, and keep going. Life has a lot more to offer you when you bring a relaxed, peaceful state of mind the it.
Relaxation – Your Doorway to Inner Peace
Did you know that there have been more than 3,000 studies on the beneficial health effects of relaxation? In fact, relaxation techniques have been found to help people significantly reduce the damaging effects of stress on the mind and the body. And in our modern world, this resurgence of awareness around relaxation is essential. Why? Because the number of stress-factors has increased rapidly with the advent of the information age.
According to Harvard University’s Mind-Body Medical Institute, stress-related disorders make up between 60-90% of all doctor visits in the United States. ( http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/relaxation-techniques-000359.htm) This alarming statistic cannot be ignored.
Fortunately, the solution is no mystery when you bring Shiva’s 5th Truth, Sambhava, into your life. Relaxation is the doorway to a greater state of inner peace. An inner peace that remains constant, regardless of external circumstances.
Yoga and Meditation
Many studies have examined the effects of yoga and meditation on physiological functions such as heart rate, blood pressure and even brain chemistry. Some of the latest research has demonstrated that a regular practice of meditation can physically rewire your brain toward greater happiness and inner peace. (http://abcnews.go.com/US/meditation-wiring-brain-happiness/story?id=14180253#.UK_Xg2lER4w).
A team from Massachusetts General Hospital conducted a study involving brain scans of 16 individuals. Researches compared before and after scans of people who took part in an eight-week meditation course.
Their conclusions were impressive. The study, published in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging ( http://www.psyn-journal.com/article/S0925-4927(10)00288-X/abstract), revealed that the parts of the participants’ brains associated with compassion and self-awareness had literally grown in size after completing the 8 week course. But it gets even better: the parts of the brain associated with stress actually shrank.
Cultivate your Sambhava (Inner Peace) for Serenity During times of Chaos
No matter what your current situation is, or how difficult it might be, it is important to always maintain peacefulness in your life. When things go wrong, dig deep within yourself to find the reserves of composure and peace that will help you still the chaos and provide serenity.
Never before has humanity needed the ability to access Sambhava as much as today, and this is why I feel such an urgency to reach as many people as possible with all of Shiva’s Truths, but particularly, Sambhava.
Through introspection you can find your Sambhava.
