I used to wonder…
- · Why would someone be Unhappy with their Jobs, yet stay on in those very Jobs?
- · Why would someone hate going home, yet still be in a relationship that caused such negative emotions?
- · Why would someone knowingly engage in a practice that was harming their health?
The Teachings of Shiva on this Subject are crystal clear:
Shiva represented one’s Svabhava (Swa-Bhav). Svabhava could also be described as our tendencies, or attitude. Shiva, despite having the choice of being a more flamboyant and dynamic god chose to be the Ultimate yogi.
Shiva’s inherent Nature was to be a Yogi, and hence he is called the Maha Yogi meaning The Great Meditator. He would renounce/ give up everything from time to time to keep in touch with his inherent nature i.e. his great internal Svabhava.
Wow. Isn’t this deeply insightful.
Shiva knew that come what may, if he would stick to his Svabhava, he would tap into and create a better place for us mortals.
One of the most important things in life is that people should enjoy their work environment.
Why is it that most people don’t love their work environment?
Is it because their environment is actually that bad or is it because they never spent time trying to understand their own Svabhava?
I have some colleagues at work who hate the demeanor and giggles of teenagers who study at our college. And I ask them didn’t they know that these giggles come along with any university environment, and that they would not enjoy it?
But then realized where they were coming from. It is the conditioning that we come from. Our conditioning has somehow brought us to a point where we just do things without realizing if they are actually good for us. We have somewhere surrendered ourselves to the outer self, and forgotten what our inner self TRULY desires.
We must go within and realize our Svabhava, i.e. aspects of our personality that we cannot change. I have realized this about my own Svabhava, I am drawn to people who like analysis, I like books, dvd’s and videos that analyze different subjects.
But the question remains, why are some people unsuccessful at every job they undertake?
Svabhava and Place of work should be in Tandem with each other. I love Young Adults so I am a college professor surrounded by young people. As a consequence, I love the environment I work in, and desire to be there every day. Every morning of every day, I speak to them for one hour each, back to back and still enjoy this activity even though I have been doing it for over 30 years.
The same applies to our relationships and health. We must choose our Svabhava for all fronts of our lives.
Now it is difficult to break out of the patterns of our mind (The next chapter will talk more about this), and we all need logical reasoning, a coach and another perspective for us to be able to bring about that change.
