Lesson 3: Shiva’s 3rd Truth – Svabhava
In today’s Lesson, you will come to recognize your unique and inherent nature through Shiva’s 3rd Truth, Svabhava. This will help you to develop and hone the skills that you are good at. By identifying your talents, you will start on your path to being happy and successful at the same time.
Please don’t be seduced by the notion of being perfect, for it is does not exist! Many people get caught up in this dangerous habit of mind. The results are inevitable: a sense of failure and disappointment that leads to unhappiness.
Instead you must aspire to be the best human being possible in the way that is uniquely YOU. Shiva is the ideal teacher and role model of this most important element of self-understanding, because he himself is one of the most unique beings in all of Hindu mythology!
Discover Who You Truly Are
In order to achieve Purnatva, it is essential that you take the time to ask yourself:
• “Who am I, truly?
• What is my unique nature?
• What are my strengths, weaknesses and special characteristics?
• What do I bring that’s unique and adds value to my family, my community and this planet?”
We all have an inherent nature which we have derived through our genes or early childhood experiences. The one quality that all the successful people I have ever met seem to share is their ability to nurture the positive points of their own inherent nature.
But it bothers me that the larger number of the people I come across fail to recognize their uniqueness. These people spend their lives dissatisfied and unfulfilled because they are living someone else’s dream, disconnected from the qualities and characteristics which make them one-of-a-kind. Thus my purpose today is to reveal Shiva’s Truth of Svabhava so that you can discover your own uniqueness and fulfill the unique purpose of your life.
The Human Potential Movement
There is no better illustration of the importance of Svabhava in our modern world than in the gains made by leaders in the Human Potential Movement. Begun in the 1960s as a way to help people get out of living life on ‘auto-pilot’, the trend of self-discovery grew in the western world by fantastic proportions!
The Human Potential Movement was first identified in the 1982 best-seller, Megatrends. (http://ascd.com/ASCD/pdf/journals/ed_lead/el_198305_reviews.pdf) Author John Naisbitt and his team at the Naisbitt Group studied more than 2 million newspaper articles over a period of 12 years. Their findings 3 decades ago foretold exactly the world we are living in today: That an exponential shift away from institutional-centered help and toward self-help (in all areas of life) was the wave of the future.
Today we can see how accurate the Naisbitt Groups predictions were. Both in terms of psychological and emotional wellbeing, as well as in things like nutrition and exercise as a preventative for disease, millions of people worldwide are discovering their unique nature, and then living life according to this self-understanding.
Rather than conforming to common societal ‘norms’ and living life on ‘auto-pilot’, it is possible today to explore your own unique nature through many new therapies the movement had spawned, along with the ancient wisdom teachings of the Eastern World, including the Truths of Shiva.
After much intense meditation, Shiva was able to fully embody his own Svabhava. With what he learned about his unique, inherent nature, he distinguished himself from the plethora of Indian gods, bringing forth all of his seemingly contrary aspects: Creator, destroyer, husband and ally.
By knowing and honoring his own unique nature, Shiva was able to face many adverse situations. Through the stories of how he handles these challenges, he teaches us that, for any truly successful undertakings, you must operate from your own unique strengths and characteristics.
You will face challenges in your life, and if you cannot handle them in the manner best suited to you, it will ultimately make things
How Would Shiva Handle Money Challenges?
Here is a very interesting question that was asked of me at one of my lectures: How would Shiva deal with a financial dilemma? The answer lies in his ability to make decisions based on his Svabhava. Let me explain …
Through his unique nature, Shiva would handle a money challenge by bringing his Strengths to bear on the situation. He would bring his strength of Focus to discern how best to handle the problem, (Ekagrata). He would apply Detached Calm in order to avoid rash or emotionally-charged decisions, (Vairagya). He would maintain a sense of Rationality and Balance as he considered all implications of the options before him, (Sayyam). And whatever final decision he made, he would maintain a sense of Inner Peacefulness in order to allow time for the challenge to resolve through proper action, (Sambhava).
Combined, these qualities, Shiva’s ‘Truths’ are what make him unique. And it is from that place of self-aware uniqueness that he would make a wise decision.
In other words, Shiva would make the best decision for all concerned because he is deeply in touch with his own Svabhava, and therefore able to handle the stress involved under difficult financial circumstances.
How to Find Your Own Svabhava
Everyone has a number of unique talents and inner gifts. For those who think otherwise, I ask you, please – do think again.
You may not know what your unique nature and talents are right now, but you certainly can find them! Why don’t you first try finding out through Ekagrata? Use your focus to find what it is that you are good at. You do not have to paint masterpieces like Da Vinci or weave stories like Shakespeare. You could be good with numbers or organization, for example. Or perhaps you excel at making others feel good about themselves. Maybe your gifts are those of debate – arguing a matter to its ultimate conclusion.
You will know what these gifts are by how good you feel when you consider developing them!
Look deep within. What is it that jumps out at you? What is it that makes you happy and provides you with a sense of achievement? THIS is your Svabhava or your unique, inherent nature. Develop and hone these skills. You will soon discover that this thing is what will pave the way for your greater happiness and success.
Maintaining Positivity when the Future Appears Grim
We have to remember that life is full of ups and downs. And while you might be reading this during a time of difficulty, it is important to concentrate on your future and what good energy your current circumstances might bring.
During 30 years of studying Shiva, I was disheartened many times. Sometimes a lead that I had been following for months was a dead end. Sometimes the answer I sought was buried under a mountain of files and folders. But as I dug through the myths of Shiva (following my own Svabhava of scholar and persistent researcher), I read things about this god that helped me keep a positive outlook.
So I made a list of the things Shiva would do if he were ever faced with a bleak outlook (financial or otherwise). I would like to share this list with you today.
● Use Ekagrata. Focus on what you really want and strive towards it with full commitment.
● Don’t get frustrated. Push forward through any negativity or anger that arises. Sometimes change takes time, so it is important to not to lose heart.
● Don’t be lazy. If your job is not ideal, maybe a change in career is necessary. Make a new resume/CV, apply for different positions and take a step in a new direction. But in the meantime, avoid being lazy at your current work. You must give your full energy in order to bring about the most optimal results in both your current and future work.
● Let go of Ego. If you are in an extreme financial situation, take whatever job comes your way. It will provide immediate relief from
your burden so that you can think without being under severe stress. Being stubborn about only acquiring a certain position might lead to losing other opportunities you cannot yet see.
● Recognise your Svabhava or unique, inherent nature. Focus on what is within you, look for your specific talents. You will soon discover that this is what will pave the way for your happiness and success.
All the things I have mentioned will help you lead a positive life. Though they might not lead to immediate gains, do not be disheartened. Use these ways to make yourself more stable and focused, and in time you will see the positive impact it has on your life.
Cultivate your Unique Nature (Svabhava) for Greater Success
If you have faced the challenge of an unfulfilling career, a dissatisfying relationship, or forms of ‘entertainment’ that leave you bored and unhealthy, then you are probably not connected with your Svabhava. In order to truly fulfill the purpose of your soul, and to do it with greater happiness and satisfaction, it is essential to understand your unique nature, and to direct your life accordingly.
Use your Svabhava to make your own path in this world. When you hone in on your true nature, you will find that this is also what makes you happiest. And where there is positivity … success and fulfillment will not be far behind!
